Congress wins the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections

News Update : YSR Reddy sworn in as the Chief Minister on Andhra Pradesh for the second consecutive term on Wednesday, May 20 2009

Congress I symbol The Congress has managed to win the Andhra Pradesh assembly elections winning 155 of the 294 seats in the state. The main opposition party, TDP, gave a good fight this election leading/winning around 100 seats, but it wasn’t enough to remove the incumbent government of Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

In another feather in Congress’ cap, they have also managed to win 33 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

Voting fraud reported in Andhra Pradesh

In the first reports of it’s kind, voting fraud was reported from Andhra Pradesh. The Election Commission has reordered polling in 63 booths in the state after discrepancies in voting were caught on camera. In a shocking incident, a polling official was caught on camera actually voting while voters stood as spectators.

The EC should mandate cameras in all polling stations to ensure such incidents do not recur henceforth.

India’s 29th state Telangana to be formed soon ?

Granting statehood to the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh has become a key election issue in the region. All the political parties, except Congress are in favour of carving a new state. Indian Express is reporting that the Congress, which has been isolated over the Telangana statehood issue and under Opposition attack for “letting down” the region and its people, may now change it’s stand. Party president Sonia Gandhi is expected to endorse the demand for a separate Telangana state during her visit to Andhra Pradesh on February 27-28.

While Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy has been opposed to bifurcation of the state, Congress leaders from Telangana have made several representations to the party high command, pleading for Congress endorsement of a separate Telangana.

The Telangana region accounts for 15 Lok Sabha seats and these 15 seats could play a decisive role in case of a Hung parliament. Hence the rush by all political parties to endorse it’s statehood.
