Allies begin demanding cabinet posts

Flush with the success of the Lok Sabha elections, the four pre-poll allies of the Congress have begin negotiating for their share of the pie.

The DMK has already asked for seven cabinet positions. I guess their logic is that if they ask for seven, they will get five.

Farooq Abdullah of the National Conference has also expressed a desire for a cabinet post for the party (read him).

Mamta Banerjee has not yet expressed a desire to join the cabinet in Delhi, claiming to be concentrating on the coming Assembly elections in West Bengal in 2011. As expected, the party has called for pre-poning the elections.

NCP has been quiet so far …

UPA confident of forming the next government

With 261 seats in it’s bag, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), is confident of getting support of 11 additional MPs to cross the magic number of 272 needed for a majority in the parliament. Speculation is rife in main stream media that the parties that constituted the fourth front (RJD,SP and LJP) will not be invited to support the UPA government; instead the UPA will rely on like-minded independents and smaller parties to make up for the shortfall.

Apart from the Congress party that won 206 seats on it’s own, the UPA consists of Sharad Pawar’s NCP, M. Karunanidhi’s DMK, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Farooq Abdullah’s National Conference, who won the remaining 55. Leaders of these four parties are expected to be part of the new cabinet. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is also expected to join the cabinet.

The PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will give his resignation to the President on Monday who will ask him to continue as the interim-PM. The Election Commission will present the list of successful Lok sabha candidates to President Pratibha Patil on Monday evening.

Dr. Manmohan Singh is expected to be sworn in as the PM either on 20 or 22 May 2009.

We are a party of economically weak and downtrodden people, without any kind of support from industrialists and businessmen, who are patrons of other political parties like the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). We therefore depend on contribution from supporters, who donate to the party funds on my birthday.

The common people of Rajasthan were terrorised under Raje’s rule. Now their mandate is to put her shadow of terror behind,”

It is, however, worrying that a neighbouring state might even consider acting on the basis of such a hoax call, try to give it credibility with other states, and confuse the public by releasing the story in part,”
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Dec 7, 2008

Today we are witnessing an unacceptable rise in intolerance. Our society seems more divided, more angry and tragically more violent,”
PM, Manmohan Singh, Dec 6, 2008

Omar Abdullah as Chief Minister of J&K

News Update on Jan 5 2009 : Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the 11th CM of J&K. He is the youngest person to hold this position.

State Elections logo National Conference announced today that it would be forming the government in Jammu and Kashmir with Farooq Abdullah’s son, Omar Abdullah becoming the Chief Minister.

Omar Abdullah is in Delhi currently to discuss the formation of a coalition Government with the Congress. If he is backed by the Congress, he will have the unique distinction of becoming the youngest CM of the troubled state.

The Congress has not made any official announcement of it’s decision. They have also been having talks with the PDP party, led by Mufti Mohammad Syed, on forming a government like they did before the state went under governor’s rule following the confidence motion loss for Azad’s government.

The fractured verdict in the state has given ample opportunity to the power brokers to play the field. Does this indicate the state of things after the coming general elections which are also predicted to result in a hung parliament ?

Jammu & Kashmir election results: NC-Congress tie up ?

State Elections logo Jammu and Kashmir state assembly election results were announced today. The results threw up some surprises with National Conference (NC) emerging as the largest party and BJP wining many seats in Jammu. (For seats won by each party refer to the state elections page)

Now that the results are in, hectic negotiations have begun among the various parties to form the government in Srinagar. National Conference, having won the most seats in the election, is expected to be invited to form the government. The party has been portraying Omar Abdullah as the Chief Minister candidate. NC has also begun talking with Congress to form a coalition government.

BJP’s victory in Jammu is being attributed to a communalized electorate post the Amarnath row last summer. Whoever forms the government in J&K, the real winner of these elections is the Election Commission for conducting a free and fair elections at a time when everyone had doubts that it could be done.
